...of Polish-medium schools across the north. More than 600 children learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) in primary schools list Polish as their first language. In addition, almost 230 pupils from Poland are being educated in secondary schools and a further 17 attend grammars. The numbers are high enough to justify the community bringing forward a plan for the north’s first Polish-medium school. The Polish government has said it plans to open a school in Dublin this year to cater for some of the thousands of Poles living in the Republic. Ministers said so many people had left for the Republic to find work that they needed to give the youngest an opportunity to receive a Polish education. Education minister Caitriona Ruane has said, however, that she would prefer to integrate ethnic-minority children into English and Irish-medium classrooms in the north. ...a lot of the young generation have the same kind of ultra-conservative, bigoted ideas about homosexuality as their elders, well then that means there is little or no progress being made, or at least that it is certainly lapsing behind most other countries when it comes to getting rid of old-fashioned bigoted ideas. @Crystalring: Yeah, they do discriminate, in the cases where school places are very limited. There was some controversy a while back where that happened in a school in Dublin because the school was over-subscribed. But the important thing is that they are entitled to favour Catholic children to ''foster a Catholic ethos'. It's not just children, either, it's anyone who applies for a job as a teacher. My mother worked as a teacher, and the chaplain had a say in who was appointed. I once asked her what would happen if someone who wasn't Catholic or religious applied for a job, and she just laughed and...
